Motivation:
Schücking promoted international law and arbitration. He criticized the Prussian policy towards Poles and Danes in Schleswig-Holstein, labeling it a product of a "nationalist disease". Schücking contributed to the founding of "Neues Vaterland", he was associated with the Institute of International Law since 1910, and he wrote the book "Der Staatenverband der Haager Konferanzen" (1912).
